Kulung Rai and Sherpa Cultural Trek
Kulung Rai and Sherpa Cultural Trek

This is one of the recently opened and untouched trails for trekking which starts from Phaflu and ends at the same destination. In this trek, you can observe the unique culture of Kulung Rai and Sherpa people who have their own distinct culture. We visit mainly the major Kulung Community Bung and Cheskam and the beautiful Sherpa village called Khiraule. Here, Bung means beautiful flower in Rai language. It is a particularly pleasant middle hills village, clean and spread out. Bung, Chheskam and Godel are the most remote V.D.C of Solukhumbu district where no any facilities of electricity and transportation till few years ago. Later around 2010 some foreigner donated huge amount for the hydropower seeing the miserable condition and became success for that at last. So, now everywhere there is the facilities of electricity. The Kulung Rai is uneducated and they have their own customs. Chhyang (usually a mixed of corn more and millet less) and Raksi distilled from the chhyang. They are called local beer and wine as well. The Rai culture has been surprisingly durable and men wears Phenga (a sleeveless jackets made from allo) and women wears Pharia and Lungi wrap skirt. In this region all the people use Ghum a folding bamboo mat with either big leaves of trees or plastic sandwiched between to protect from rain as the rainy season.
Most of the women still wear the traditional double nose piece, the dhungri which is round and the hanging piece and Jhamke. The houses are all still made from traditional adobe mude and, though steel roofs are arriving, most are either wooden shingles with bamboo mats over the top or thatched. Inside, the fire is always in the middle of the room so that in winter everyone especially the guests can sit around it. The uneducated people carry ghee, eggs, corn, millet and quite a bit meat to Lukla and Namche Bazaar to sell and earn money. The panoramic view of Numbur Himal, old Buddhist monasteries, Thamserku Himal, Mera South, Mera Central and Mera North, Rectangular Himal, unique Sherpa and Kulung Rai’s culture, green green beautiful country sides and different sorts of flora and fauna are the main attractions of this trek.
