Upper Mustang trek is one of the popular treks of Annapurna region and Lomanthang is the prime destination of it. It is a restricted area and we have to make the special permits to enter at least for 10 days and the days will be counted from the day you have entered into the restricted area. The entry point for restricted area starts from Kagbeni and ends at the same place. It was popular only for camping trek but recently there are the facilities of Tea house trek as well. Lomanthang is the main attraction of this trek where visit Mustang King's palace and old monasteries. 

There are many old and beautiful monasteries and you can visit those monasteries and if you are lucky you can see the horse riding festival which they called "Yartung" festival.The unique culture of Tibetan, beautiful scenery of green bare countryside, old Buddhist monasteries, holy places, palace and cheerful king of Mustang are the key attraction for this trek. It can be done from March to December and this trek is highly recommended for those people who want to explore the Tibetan culture along with longer adventurous trek during their visit to Nepal.

 

Brief itinerary:

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m)
Day 02: Full day Sightseeing in Kathmandu
Day 03: Kathmandu to Pokhara (820m) by tourist bus 6/7 hours
Day 04: Pokhara to Jomsom (2,710m) flight and trek to Kagbeni (2,800m) 4/5 hours
Day 05: Kagbeni to Chaile (3,100m) 6/7 hours
Day 06: Chaile to Shyangboche 5/6 hours
Day 07: Shyangboche to Ghami (3,510m) 5/6 hours
Day 08: Ghami to Charang (3,560m) 4/5 hours
Day 09: Charang to Lomanthang (3,840m) 5/6 hours
Day 10: Rest day at Lomanthang
Day 11: Lomanthang to Di (3,390m) 6/7 hours
Day 12: Di to Shyangboche 6/7 hours
Day 13: Shyangboche to Tangbe (3,060) 5/6 hours
Day 14: Tanbe to Muktinath (3,760m) 6/7 hours
Day 15: Muktinath to Jomsom (2,720m) 5/6 hours

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m)

Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport is the only one international airport of Nepal from where you will be welcomed with a great hospitality by the representative of United Brothers Trek and Expedition and transferred to the hotel. After having checked in the hotel, we will give you a short briefing about the trip and collect the essential documents (Passport and Photos) from you to issue the trekking permits. You can rest the leisure time exploring around and stay a night at the hotel with breakfast.

Day 02: Full day Sightseeing in Kathmandu

You can get up in the morning and have breakfast at the hotel. After breakfast we will come to pick you up at the hotel and take for full day sightseeing around Kathmandu valley (the world heritage site). At first, we will drive you to Swayambunath Temple. Swayambunath means self-originated Buddhist Temple which is known as Monkey Temple as well. It is located on the top of the hill from where you can see the superb view of the whole Kathmandu Valley. After having visited this holy temple, we will drive you to Boudha Stupa. It is a holy place for Buddhist and pilgrims which was slightly damaged during due the tremor of 2015 but later rebuilt. It is one of the largest spherical stupas in the world. From here, we will take you to Pashupatinath Temple that is pretty close from Boudhanth. Pashupatinath Temple, located at the bank of the Bagmati River is one of the biggest and most popular Shrines where you can behold for Hindus. Pashupatinath Temple which is the biggest Hindu Temple. You can see the ritual and cremation activities according to the Hindus Culture. At the end of the day, we will return back to the hotel. By the evening, we will take you to a Nepali restaurant for welcome dinner with typical Nepali cultural dance. At last, we will drop you to the hotel and spend a night with breakfast.

Day 03: Kathmandu to Pokhara (820m) by tourist bus 6/7 hours

On the next day, early in the morning, we will go to the tourist bus station to head to Pokhara which takes approximately 6/7 hours. Pokhara is 200km far from Kathmandu and the journey commences with the beautiful scenery of Trishuli River, Manaslu Himal, Lamjung himal and the green countryside. After 6/7 hours of long drive we will get to Pokhara. Pokhara a beautiful city for tourist is the starting point of most of the short and longer treks of the western Nepal. It has its own value due to the tremendous view of Mt. Fishtail, Gangapurna, Annapurna iii, Lamjung Himal, Stupa view and Fewa Lake. You can visit, Devid Fall, Mahendra Cave, Bat Cave, Barahi Temple, World Peace Stupa and Sarangkot. World Peace Stupa and Sarangkot are the best view point of Pokhara from where you can see the picturesque views of entire Pokhara valley and mountains views of Annapurna range. We spend a night there with breakfast.

Day 04: Pokhara to Jomsom (2,710m) flight and trek to Kagbeni (2,800m) 4/5 hours

Today, we fly from Pokhara to Jomsom along with the stunning view of green view of the hilly region and snow-capped Mountain views of Annapurna range and Mt.Dhaulagiri which takes about 30 minutes. Jomsom, a beautiful village is the district head quarter of Mustang. All the government office, museums, Travel office and bank are located here. From here we follow the narrow main street past several hotels to the school and statue of King Birendra at the northern end of the town. The trail continues and follows the broad river valley, sometimes above the river, but mostly along the rocky bank of the river itself as it passes beneath vertical rock cliffs and finally arrives at Eklo Bhatti. Today you can find Saligram on the way if you are lucky. We follow the lower trail which goes to Kagbeni and Upper Mustang. Kagbeni is the entrance for Upper Mustang.  It looks like a town out of the medieval past, with closely packed mud houses, dark tunnels, imposing Chhorten and a large ochre-colored gompa perched above the town. We stay a night at lodge.

Day 05: Kagbeni to Chaile (3,100m) 6/7 hours

After Kagbeni, we will enter into the restricted area of Upper Mustang. The trail first gently climbs up a hill straight following the river and passes a huge yak pasture with the views of Mt. Nilgiri, red sandstone pillar and the desert area like a landscape. Then descends downhill to stream and arrives at a small village called Tangbe where we stop for lunch. After that we continue our journey to Chaile with the picturesque views of old caves hanging on the wall. At the end of our journey, we have to cross the river and then climb up around 45 minutes and finally arrives at Chaile. We spend a night there.

Day 06: Chaile to Shyangboche 5/6 hours

From Chaile, the trail starts with uphill though the gorge with the view of some snow-capped mountains and Kaligandaki valley and arrives at Samar village. After that, we descend to the stream, cross it and continue our journey to Shyangboche. After 2 hours of walking, a Samar red printed cave monastery (Rangchung Chorten, one of the most holy places of Mustang) can be seen. It is believed that the Chorten was formed by itself. According to the legend, the Gurun Padma Sambhawa and Atisha meditated in this cave many years ago .The path follows through small green trees and on the way to it, you can see the way to go to the Cave on the wall of the rock. As the valley broadens out, we can see the Mountain blue sheep, leopard and other wild animals and finally arrives at Shyangboche. We stay overnight there.

Day 07: Shyangboche to Ghami (3,510m) 5/6 hours

After having spent a night at Shyangboche, the way climbs up and passes the Yang La pass where you can see a red Chorten pointed with Buddhist eight auspicious symbol is built, After that, a small village called " Ghelung " with some yellowish trees  can be seen. Here you can see two nice Buddhist Monasteries. From here, we continue our journey through uphill and cross Mi La Pass straight ahead. From here we descend down and cross another pass called Ghami La pass and then we descend down to a huge valley appears village on the left side which is called Ghami. We spend a night there.

Day 08: Ghami to Tsarang (3,560m) 4/5 hours

We start our trek to Tsarang after breakfast. Today the trail goes passing a Mustang's largest Mani wall (Pray wheel) approximately1000m long decorated with simple carvings with Buddhist letters. There is a small group of Chortens (Temples) in front of the red wall which were built by Guru Rinpoche to protect the area from demons attack. After crossing the wall, the trail makes a steep climb around 2 hours and crosses a pass called Geker (3820m). Then the way slowly descends down to a small beautiful village called Tsarang. Before reaching there, we can see a nice red temple. Here, you can visit the old Tsarang palace and a monastery as well.  We spend a night there.

Day 09: Charang to Lomanthang (3,840m) 5/6 hours

Leaving Tsarang, the trail first descends down to a small stream, crosses it and then continues to Lomanthang through a desert with the beautiful scenery of Tsarang village, small bare brown hill and small peaks. After 3-4 hours of walking, we get on a view point from where the beautiful scenery of the entire Lomanthang can be observed clearly. From here, the trail climbs down and crosses the creek and finally arrives at Lomanthang. We spend night there.

Day 10: Rest day at Lomanthang

Lomanthang is the capital city of upper Mustang where you can visit many old monasteries along with a palace. You have whole day free and you can do sightseeing around the city and get relaxed.

Day 11: Lomanthang to Di (3,390m) 6/7 hours

We trek to Di from Lomanthang and return back from the same way up to the view point and then follow the left side route to head down to Di. There is no any lodges on the way today. The path is a bit dusty and most of the trail are on the flat and somewhere it is up and down. On the way, you can see the beautiful scenery of the countryside along with some small peaks, villages and yak pasture. It takes about 5/6 hours to get to Di from Lomanthang. We stay overnight there at Tent.

Day 12: Di to Shyangboche 6/7 hours

From here, the route goes along the Kaligandaki River and then later it makes a small climb as we get at the bottom of Tsarang village. We stop at Tsarang for lunch and then descend down to Shyangboche through the same way and spend a night there.

Day 13: Shyangboche to Tangbe (3,060) 5/6 hours

On this day, we take the direct trail to Samar following the way of high above the canyons. On the way to it, you can see the outstanding views of Annapurna range, Nilgiri, Tilicho himal and the green countryside. We have to cross two valley before getting to Samar. After having lunch at Samar, we descend down to the riverside and cross it over the bridge and then follow the same route to Tanbe where we spend a night.

Day 14: Tanbe to Muktinath (3,760m) 6/7 hours

The trail commences with a spectacular view of countryside and natural caves clinging on the wall. The trail is flat at the beginning and then climbs up crossing Tetang vilage. The trail goes continually through green meadow and after few hours of walking, we will get to the high pass. From here we can see the breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains along with the beautiful scenery of Muktinath village. From the pass, the trail is easy and descends down to a creek with unforgettable scenery and crosses it and finally arrives at Muktinath. It is a famous pilgrimage for both Hindu and Buddhist. We spend a night there.  

Day 15: Muktinath to Jomsom (2,720m) 5/6 hours

After having visited the famous pilgrimage, we continue our journey to Jomsom with the view of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and the beautiful scenery of countryside. The trail descends constantly down to Eklobhatti through Jarkot and Kinger village. Today the way is a bit windy after 11am. From Eklobhatti, we follow the same route to Jomsom. Today is the last day of our trek and we celebrate our final day being together by the evening to thank to all our staffs for their hard working and stay overnight there.

Day 16: Jomsom to Pokhara fly or by jeep

Today, we fly back to Pokhara early in the morning or drive by Jeep and stay a night at Pokhara.

Day 17: Pokhara to Kathmandu

We fly or by bus to Kathmandu which takes 30 minutes by flight and 6/7 hours by bus.

Day 18: At Kathmandu

You have whole day free for shopping and packing for your final departure and by the evening we will take you for farewell dinner organized by United Brothers Trek and Expedition.

Day 19: Final departure

We drop you to the airport for your final departure and say good bye till you next visit.
